Do You Struggle With Change?
To some degree, we are all creatures of habit... we organize our lives in a predictable, well thought out pattern, we enjoy being comfortable, we like knowing what is coming next. But what happens when life throws you a curve ball, when the circumstances of our life sudden shift underneath our feet, when we are forced to change?
Transitioning to the changes that happen in our lives can be overwhelming and uncomfortable, but implementing specific strategies can make it more bearable and allow you to navigate change successfully! Here are a few suggestions:
1. Acknowledge the Loss
Change always comes with an element of loss. We are giving up one thing and transitioning to something else. It is important to acknowledge and identify the losses you are experiencing because of the change in your life. Grieving and processing a loss is an important first step towards embracing change.
2. Maintain Perspective
When we experience change, sometimes we expect too much of ourselves during the different phases of transitioning to something new. We have to maintain perspective on what we expect from ourselves. Take time to set some realistic expectations about how you will feel as the transition unfolds.
3. Identify Concrete Tasks
Identifying small, concrete tasks to complete will help you move forward in a positive and tangible way. Think about what you can do TODAY that will keep you going. Each tiny task you complete will help you feel more confident and comfortable in your newfound situation.
4. Reflect on Your Experience
Change can be a great opportunity to pause and reflect! Reflection allows you to see the ways that you have grown prior to this change or transition and you determine how you hope to continue to grow in the future. Reflecting can also be a powerful means of reminding yourself of time when previous transitions or changes went well in your life.
5. Look for New Opportunities
Try to identify the positive opportunities that are being made possible by this change or transition. Can you learn new skills or develop a new relationship? Use this time of uncertainty as an opportunity to explore the possibilities that come along with life changes and transitions!
