Finding the Right Counselor

Once you have made the decision to start the counseling process, how to you find the right counselor for you? In the confusing and often overwhelming world of counselors and therapy, where do you begin?

Ask a Friend

In our digital age, many people rely on the internet to find a counseling, but often the best place to start is by asking a friend, “Do you know a good therapist?” A referral from a friend who knows you, may have some knowledge about what you are currently experiencing and is connected to a counselor is great place to start.

Pay Attention to Specializations

How does the counselor speak about their areas of specialization on their website? Do you relate to what they have specific training or expertise in? Do the ways they are communicating about specific struggles you may be experiencing resonate with you?

One Size Does Not Fit All

Remember, there is not one counselor who is going to be right for everybody! And that is okay! Make sure that you and your counselor are a good fit for one another. One of the main elements that makes counseling effective is your relationship with your counselor. It is worth your time and energy to make sure you find someone who is right for you!
